Cranberry Marketing Committee Announces 2016-2018 Members & Crop Production Forecast
Wareham, MA (PRWEB) August 30, 2016 -- The Cranberry Marketing Committee (CMC) held its annual summer meeting August 8 and 9 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. During this meeting Committee members and alternates were announced into their roles for the term beginning August 1, 2016 and running through July 31, 2018.
As stated in the Cranberry Marketing Order, the CMC consists of 13 grower members, and 9 grower alternate members, as well as one public member and one public alternate member. Independent nominations were held in April with voting taking place in May. Major Cooperative Members & Alternates were appointed by the board of Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc. In June, all appointees submitted Qualification Statements to the USDA Secretary. The CMC received Selection Approval from the Secretary for all appointees prior to its annual summer meeting.

During its annual summer meeting, the CMC also forecast domestic production for the crop which will be harvested this fall. Drought conditions in Massachusetts led to a decrease in forecast numbers and, alternatively, favorable growing conditions in Wisconsin led to an increase in projected harvest numbers. If the CMC’s estimate is accurate, domestic production will be up approximately 1 million barrels over last year. This year’s forecast for each growing region is as follows:
Massachusetts 2,079,000 barrels
New Jersey 533,000 barrels
Wisconsin 5,814,000 barrels
Oregon 447,000 barrels
Washington 170,000 barrels
Total 9,043,000 barrels
