These experts were asked by CMRubinWorld: “What are the best examples you have seen of teachers closing the gender gap in education?”
The Top Global Teacher Bloggers offered a range of insights from years of innovating pedagogical practice across numerous cultures. The gender gap is different across the globe. In many developing countries—particularly in places like Sierra Leone where Miriam Mason-Sesay teaches—women are often culturally excluded from educational opportunities. Therefore it is of vital importance to “catch them young and to teach them their value and make sure that the negative messages never get a chance to take hold.” But in other countries it is young boys who are falling behind. In countries like the U.S., teachers report “a school culture in which academic achievement is valued less socially among boys than it is among girls.” Maarit Rossi from Finland believes it’s vital that “schools deliberately mix the genders in the classrooms, train students to work in diverse groups and so support the growth of equality and understanding.”
The Top Global Teacher Bloggers is a monthly series where educators around the world offer experienced yet unique takes on today’s most important topics. CMRubinWorld utilizes the platform to propagate the voices of the most indispensable people of our learning institutions, teachers.
