Some of the biggest offenders when it comes to the spread of bacteria in public places are office coffee pots, light switches, door handles, and telephones.

Jan-Pro, one of the leading commercial cleaning companies in Columbus, Ohio, works with clients to keep businesses looking spotless; however, the janitorial service is also known for its cutting edge, environmentally friendly solutions for eliminating germs, bacteria, and allergens commonly found in commercial spaces such as office buildings, doctors’ offices, banks, and day care centers. This spring, Jan-Pro of Columbus offers some tips for avoiding germs and bacteria in public spaces.
Fact: The Center for Disease Control reports that educating people on proper hand-washing can reduce respiratory illnesses, like colds, in the general population by 21%.
Tip #1: Jan-Pro of Columbus urges businesses to educate staff on how hand-washing is crucial to warding off unwanted germs. Proactively hanging signage in bathrooms, the cafeteria, and at entryways helps bring attention to commonly touched items in the office that could carry germs and bacteria, but more importantly prompts more hand-washing.
Jan-Pro President, Rick Wolverton, comments, “Some of the biggest offenders when it comes to the spread of bacteria in public places are office coffee pots, light switches, door handles, and telephones. These spots are often overlooked, but touched repeatedly every day.”
Fact: In a study from Michigan State University and reported in the Journal of Environmental Health, researchers found that only 5% of people wash their hands the appropriate amount of time in order to eliminate infectious bacteria after using the restroom (2013).
Tip #2: Jan-Pro reminds the public that the best way to keep germs at bay is to avoid putting hands anywhere near the mouth. For example, the first thing people do when magazine pages stick together is lick the fingers to separate the pages. This is a sure-fire way, particularly in a doctor’s office, to quickly spread germs.
Tip #3: When using public bathrooms, be sure to use the hand towel to open the door upon exiting. There’s little point to hand-washing after touching the door handle (now knowing that so few wash appropriately).
Tip #4: While traveling, note that tray tables on airplanes are a hotbed for germs. Wolverton reminds travelers, “Next time you fly, bring sanitizing wipes with you. Clean the tray tables and arm rests as soon as you sit down. Aim the overhead air duct directly in front of your face. That air is filtered and will help you breath cleaner air.
Tip #5: Stay away from open bowls of mints in restaurants, peanuts and pretzels at a party or any food that may be touched by other people. At home, wipe off light switches, door handles and telephones with sanitizing wipes often. Clean with a hospital grade disinfectant, one that requires a dwell or surface time to do its job.”
