Jan-Pro a Columbus commercial cleaning company has completed the Global Harmonization System compliance program. This has also been referenced as GHS in the janitorial line of services. What is GHS? GHS is the new classification of labeling chemicals that defines and classifies the hazards of chemical products, and communicates health and safety information on labels and material safety data sheets (called Safety Data Sheets, or SDSs, in GHS). The goal of GHS is that the same set of rules for classifying hazards, and the same format and content for labels and safety data sheets (SDS) will be adopted and used around the world. An international team of hazard communication experts developed GHS.”
We asked Rick Wolverton why is global harmonization necessary. Rick stated, “A lot of different countries have different systems for classification and labelling of chemical products. To make matters even more challenging for janitorial companies like our company Jan-Pro, is that the labelling system can have even more systems and labeling within those countries.”
As one can imagine these irregularties add more expense for government agencies to regulate and enforce, thus making it costly for companies who have to comply with many different systems.
Rick added, “Property Managers we work with are constantly asking us for new documentation on proper MSDS backup to have on file for these particular compliance issues. GHS is allowing us to help our clients now, which should save money, sanity and time.
As a part of Jan-Pro’s on-going training process, Jan-Pro of Columbus trains and certifies its staff in order to comply with this new federal requirement.”
