Samsung now dominate the mobile phone trade-in market

Apple is knocked off the top traded-in brand spot for the first time EVER

Post this

(PRWEB UK) 13 February 2014 -- Key points:
- Samsung becomes top traded-in mobile phone brand on CompareMyMobile for the first time since the site launched, making up 34.14 percent of all mobile phone trade-ins, up from 18.5 percent in 2013
- Apple is knocked off the top traded-in brand spot for the first time EVER - makes up 31.63 percent of all mobile phone trade-ins, down from almost 50 percent in 2013
- Samsung Galaxy S3 is top traded-in mobile phone of 2014, making up over 10 percent of all mobile phone trade-ins on CompareMyMobile
- iPhone 5S is most valuable mobile phone of the year 2013, with a top trade-in value of 366.78 GBP/ 601.89 USD

For the first time since the site launched in 2009, mobile phone and gadget recycling comparison site, CompareMyMobile, has seen Apple knocked off the top spot as most traded-in phone brand. Apple’s trade-in market share has dropped from almost 50 percent in 2013 to 31.63 percent in 2014, as competition in the smartphone market place increases.

The data reflects Samsung as one of Apple’s main competitors. Its phone trade-in market share almost doubled from 18.5 percent in 2013 to 34.14 percent at the beginning of 2014 – crowning it as the top traded-in brand on the site. Experts say this could be a reflection of more people owning non-Apple devices.

It is also noted that BlackBerry has seen a decrease in trade-in market share this year. At the beginning of 2013, CompareMyMobile reported it as the third top traded-in brand, making up 12 percent of all phone trade-ins. Although the manufacturer is still the third top traded-in brand, its phone trade-in market share has actually decreased by almost half – it now makes up just 6.56 percent of all trade-ins on CompareMyMobile.

Top Traded-in Mobile Phone Brands
1. Samsung: 34.14 percent*
2. Apple: 31.63 percent*
3. BlackBerry: 6.56 percent*
4. HTC: 6.49 percent*
5. Sony: 4.47 percent*

Samsung and Apple devices alone make up over two thirds of all mobile phone trade-ins on CompareMyMobile, reflecting how they have created some of the most popular devices on the market.

The Galaxy S3 is currently the top traded-in smartphone on the site – making up 10.59 percent of all mobile phone trade-ins. Apple’s iPhone 4S 16GB and iPhone 4 16GB follow in second and third, with trade-in market shares of 8.47 percent and 6.39 percent respectively.

Samsung and Apple smartphones make up nine of the top ten most traded-in mobile devices on – with Sony’s Xperia Z1 the only non-Apple and non-Samsung smartphone to make the list.

One of the reasons that Apple and Samsung devices are such popular trade-ins could be because of the prices offered by UK recycling vendors. CompareMyMobile notes that their devices dominated the list of most valuable phones of 2013.

Most valuable phones of 2013
1. Apple iPhone 5S 64GB: 366.78 GBP/ 601.89 USD
2. Apple iPhone 5S 32 GB: 366.11 GBP/ 600.79 USD
3. Apple iPhone 5S 16GB: 348.31 GBP/ 571.58 USD
4. Samsung Galaxy Note 3: 271.01 GBP/ 444.73 USD
5. Apple iPhone 5C 16GB: 250.69 GBP/ 411.38 USD
6. Sony Xperia Z1: 233.89 GBP/ 383.81 USD
7. Apple iPhone 5 64GB: 230.50 GBP/ 378.25 USD
8. iPhone 5 32GB: 218.38 GBP
9. Samsung Galaxy S4: 218.26 GBP
10. Apple iPhone 5 16GB: 214.46 GBP

(These prices reflect data collected from CompareMyMobile between 1/1/13 and 31/12/13 – live pricing on the site is subject to change.)

Yet again, Sony’s Xperia Z1 was the only non-Samsung or Apple device to make the list of top valuable mobile phones of 2013. Some top devices are still losing value though.

10. BlackBerry Bold 9900: -£150

The site notes that the Samsung Galaxy S4 and BlackBerry Z10 are on the list of the top ten phones which lost value throughout 2013 – both relatively recent and popular devices.

The average price offered for a handset also rose from 114 GBP/ 187.07 USD in 2012 to 123.55 GBP/ 202.75 USD in 2013. In fact, the average price offered for an old mobile phone on CompareMyMobile has risen by almost 600 percent since 2007.
