LOS ANGELES, March 24, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Congratulations to this year's winner of the Dr. Arthur A. Kezian DDS Science Scholarship, Ashleigh Hawk! Dr. Arthur A. Kezian is proud to award Ashleigh with the scholarship amount of $1,200 to put towards her studies. The scholarship is awarded to a deserving high school or university student every year.
Ashleigh Hawk is a very deserving winner of the 2017-2018 scholarship award. She is currently studying a double degree in Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology from Emory University and a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. Her career goals are to eventually become a surgeon so that she is able to help make an impact in many people's lives. Her interests lie in studying autoimmune diseases as well as regenerative medicine. Ashleigh hopes that furthering her education will one day help her to develop a method for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
One thing that Dr. Kezian found amazing about Ashleigh is that not only is she studying very difficult courses in University, she is also taking the time to give back to her community. At Emory, Ashleigh is president of the group Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), which helps to educate and guide peers into making good choices. She led a suicide prevention campaign and organized events to discourage distracted driving and illegal drug use as well.
Ashleigh also volunteers her time at the Clarkson Community Garden. At the garden they grow vegetables to provide to low-income families and refugees. Ashleigh understands that being healthy and improving in all aspects of your life starts with a nutritious meal, and puts her efforts into providing that option for those who may not be able to otherwise afford it. Her interest in this came during high-school, where she volunteered with meals-on-wheels to make and deliver nutritious meals to the elderly or low-income families. While in high-school, she became Valedictorian and was part of a "head start" program to help to tutor other students to improve their grades and keep them out of trouble.
Trouble was unfortunately common in Ashleigh's area of Milledgeville, GA. Gangs and violence were commonplace and it was a path that Ashleigh credits her mother for keeping her out of. With her father in prison, Ashleigh was raised solely by her mother who taught her that education was the best way to achieve her goals and dreams.
Now, with the Dr. Arthur A. Kezian DDS Science Scholarship money, she is one step closer to her goals. Having the scholarship award money will allow her to focus on what is important to her, her studies and volunteering.

The Dr. Arthur A. Kezian DDS Science Scholarship was created by Dr. Kezian, a Doctor of Dental Surgery who practices in Los Angeles. When Dr. Kezian was a student himself, he was awarded a scholarship which greatly improved his ability to study and become the dentist that he is today. He was awarded the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation scholarship which helps students of Armenian origin from developing countries go to University.
Knowing how much this scholarship would help, he vowed that when he was in a position to do so, he would give back to the community. He created the Dr. Arthur A. Kezian DDS Science Scholarship for students in the science field to help a deserving person achieve their educational goals. The Dr. Arthur A. Kezian Science Scholarship is awarded to a high school or college student who has demonstrated academic merit, community service, and financial need.
"I have been a student majoring in science myself and know how competitive the field is. By presenting students with a scholarship opportunity, I can help them understand the importance of individual accomplishment when it comes to reaching their objectives, assist them financially, and teach them about the significance of higher education."
