One of the proudest moments of White House reporter Connie Lawn’s career was the moment she met Nelson Mandela at a Washington news conference. He had listened to her radio reports while in prison, and after he hugged her and swung her around, he said, “You gave my people hope, but you are not as big as I thought you were.”

Lawn’s new autobiography, “You Wake Me Each Morning: The Final Chapter” (published by iUniverse), captures this and many other striking moments from Lawn’s career as the longest-serving, independent White House correspondent and a “one-woman news bureau.”

A self-described punk kid from New Jersey, Lawn started her own news bureau in 1968, and there was never a dull moment. She was one of the last people to interview Robert Kennedy in 1968 before his assassination, and she covered the invasion of Czechoslovakia while spending six months in the country. In 1982, she was briefly kidnapped in Beruit.

Lawn’s award-winning radio reports are broadcast all over the globe, prompting listeners from all nations to say to her, “You wake me each morning.” On Aug. 15, 2006, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Journalism from the New Zealand Parliament, and on May 10, 2012, she was appointed an Honorary Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services.

Throughout her book, Lawn seeks to give readers a humorous, insider’s perspective of life behind the news desk. To all of her readers, Lawn imparts the simple message: never give up, be different from the crowd and have fun!
