After reaching $1 billion in 2018, Craigslist revenue fell sharply in 2019, a new AIM Group report shows.

A detailed analysis of advertising on Craigslist, the most-visited classified site in the United States, showed 2019 revenue of 760 million, a drop of 27% from 2018. A 37% fall-off in job advertising, the highest revenue category on Craigslist, outweighed increases in most other categories, including a new fee for commercial and office real estate ads.

“The AIM Group has been tracking Craigslist’s revenue since 2004, and this is the first time it has fallen,” said Peter M. Zollman, founding principal of the AIM Group. “And traffic at the site is little more than half of what it was four years ago. Craigslist reached a billion dollars in revenue in 2018, so it’s a major change in fortunes for the company.”

The research is published in a 33-page special edition of AIM Group Marketplaces Report, the AIM Group’s flagship business intelligence service. It is available as a standalone report for $595 at AIMGroup.com, including category-by-category ad counts in the 90 markets the AIM Group studied to develop its revenue projection. A free preview of the 2020 Craigslist Report is available on the site.

“Craigslist is still a powerhouse - and incredibly profitable. It’s just less so than it was, and competitors are taking bigger and bigger bites out of the company’s income, most notably Facebook Marketplace,” said Zollman.
