The Search for Affordable and Worthwhile Volunteer Abroad Programs Leads Prospective Participant to CrossContinental.org
Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) August 28, 2014 -- Living and volunteering abroad is widely recognized as one of the best ways to gain cultural and language fluency, but worthwhile yet affordable volunteer programs can be hard to come by and often require lots of research. Carolyn Harmeling from Boston reports her experience while searching for volunteer abroad programs that allow for deep cultural immersion at an affordable cost.
Carolyn found CrossContinental.org on the web and she did a lot of research to find out what past volunteers thought of their experiences. Her research started online with a few websites that rate similar programs and she was quite pleased with the comments concerning Cross-Continental.
She didn't stop there, but tried to explore more about the organization through creative ways. When Carolyn saw a YouTube video of a former volunteer, Claire Lingham, who was also from the Boston area, Carolyn decided to look Claire up in the phone book. Carolyn called Claire's house and they had a long talk over the phone. Claire was excited to share the experience concerning her trip and she was happy to assist Carolyn and address any of her questions or concerns.
After hearing Carolyn's experience, the international coordinator at CrossContinental said that they are always happy to put potential volunteers in touch with past volunteers so that they might get a deeper understanding of the international volunteer experience.
In early 2014, Carolyn sent out her application to join a summer volunteer abroad program in China through CrossContinental.org. On her application, she made the heartfelt comment, "Your program looks worthwhile and affordable. I've heard nothing but good things about your programs and I've done a lot of research."
In the summer of 2014, Carolyn spent 6 unforgettable weeks in China. She stayed with a caring host family and worked at a local high school and kindergarten. She learned Mandarin, experienced real Chinese culture, went on cultural excursions with local coordinators, and had the experience of a lifetime. In the attached video (http://youtu.be/BI3Lroj5MHc), Carolyn shares and showcases her true Chinese experience. Being someone who was helped by past volunteers, Carolyn also reports that she would be happy to share her experience with future prospective volunteers.
