CrossContinental.org Creates Full Cultural Immersion and Language Learning Experience Abroad
Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) August 28, 2014 -- More and more students are learning a foreign language for practical, inspirational, or even sentimental reasons. Gaining skill in a second language opens doors for both professional and personal growth, but it takes a lot of time and dedication. Fortunately, living abroad is widely recognized as the most effective way of acquiring a new language. Third year university student Carolyn Harmeling from Boston searched for a summer cultural immersion program to enhance her foreign language skills and cultural understanding.
Mandarin is a popular foreign language choice due to China’s fast growing economy and the rich cultural history. To augment her minor in Chinese at Pennsylvania State University, Carolyn joint a summer volunteer abroad program in China for 6 weeks through CrossContinental.org. She stayed with a Chinese home-stay family and worked at a local high school and a kindergarten. In the attached video (http://youtu.be/BI3Lroj5MHc), Carolyn showcases this experience of a lifetime in China.
Upon returning home to the US, Carolyn reported that she is extremely happy with her experience abroad. The local coordinators made her feel safe and were there whenever help was needed. She said, "They even invited me out to dinner and took me on excursions! They provided me with more than I was expecting."
Speaking of the Chinese home-stay experience, Carolyn comments, "They made me feel at home, supported, and safe. They took me out to do so many activities, and I know that was more than what was expected of them. They were patient as I learned Chinese; they respected my space, and helped me through times of homesickness. They really did provide me with a home away from home."
It is hard to summarize the whole volunteer experience in just a few sentences, but Carolyn states, "CrossContinental gave me more than I could have imagined in my experience abroad, especially at such an affordable cost. My program coordinators were always accessible to me and constantly offering me support. In just six weeks I became so close to my host family and my students in China that I didn’t want to leave!" Carolyn added, "I would absolutely recommend CrossContinental to anyone who wants to be fully immersed in a foreign culture."
