PLAINSBORO, N.J. (PRWEB) November 08, 2016 -- CURE Media Group, the nation’s leading digital and print media organization focused on patients with cancer, has announced that its flagship product, CURE® magazine, won three 2016 Folio Awards, as well as an honorable mention, in the contest that recognizes uncompromising journalism and top-notch design.
The results of the national contest, which celebrates journalism and design excellence by magazines in print and digital formats, were announced by Folio during an October 31 ceremony in New York City.
“We are delighted to receive this recognition from a panel of experts in our field,” said Mike Hennessy Jr., president of Michael J. Hennessy Associates, Inc., CURE Media Group’s parent company. “It’s an indication that we are succeeding in our mission to provide education and inspiration to patients with cancer, survivors of the disease and the loved ones who help take care of them.”
Editor-in-Chief Debu Tripathy, M.D., chair of the Department of Breast Medical Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, noted that CURE® has a long tradition of winning awards for its efforts to make complex medical information accessible to patients and their families.
“Our readers look to us for solid scientific information that can help them understand the mechanisms of their illnesses and treatment options,” he said, “but we are also proud to explain both the art and science of cancer medicine and to offer the kind of support and guidance that causes people to think of CURE® as an old friend.”
In the full-issue category for consumer magazines devoted to health care, medical and/or nursing issues, CURE® won an Eddie Award for its Winter 2016 issue. That issue features a cover story on the causes of cancer, an article delving into the latest treatments for the brain cancer glioblastoma, a look at anticancer diets, the considerations involved in traveling for cancer treatment, insights into the difficulties of a cancer diagnosis for single adults, and a conversation with Jennifer Arnold, M.D., star of television’s “The Little Couple,” about her experience battling a rare cancer. The issue was compiled and edited by Managing Editor Beth Fand Incollingo and Tripathy.
CURE® won another Eddie Award for its article “Smoking Out the Evidence,” by Andrew Smith, about medical marijuana in cancer care. The category is for a single article in a consumer magazine focused on health care, medical and/or nursing news.
CURE® won an Ozzie Award in the annual one-shot category for the cover design of its October 2015 special issue on breast cancer; this category recognizes work produced in special issues that are published no more than once a year. The winning cover, designed by CURE® Creative Director Ray Pelesko, features a version of the breast cancer awareness ribbon composed of butterflies, communicating the themes of transformation, rebirth and hopefulness to show that there can be life after breast cancer.
For the editorial content in the same issue on breast cancer, CURE® earned an honorable mention for an Eddie Award in the annual one-shot category for full magazine issues.
Kerrie Keegan, vice president of editorial services and production, noted that MJH Associates acquired CURE® magazine, which was founded in 2002, just two years ago. Since then, CURE® has expanded to include not only its traditional four seasonal issues, but more than half a dozen annual special issues, each of them focused on a specific cancer type. CURE® also publishes an Annual Cancer Guide and hosts the annual Extraordinary Healer Award® for Oncology Nursing. The magazine also won an Ozzie Award in 2015, for Pelesko’s cover design of a one-time special issue on colorectal cancer.
The Folio wins, Keegan said, are an acknowledgement that CURE® is thriving under its new management.
“We work diligently to maintain the absolute highest level of quality in the pages of CURE®,” she said. “We strive to offer our readers insights that will be valuable to them as they make treatment decisions and seek emotional support during their cancer journeys — insights they may not be able to find anywhere else.”
Incollingo said she is proud of the range and quality of information that CURE® offers its readers, and is thrilled to be acknowledged by Folio for that work.
“Our magazine reaches people at a challenging and emotional time, letting them know that they’re not alone, and offering information that can help ease their journeys,” she said. “Our subscribers tell us that they read CURE® from cover to cover, and that the magazine means an enormous amount to them. To know that we’re making a difference motivates us to give our best every day.”
Pelesko was also pleased to learn of the Folio wins. “I truly appreciate that Folio recognized our work,” he said, “and am honored that we won.”
