New York, New York (PRWEB) November 11, 2013

As da Vinci robot lawsuits (http://www.davincirobotlawsuitcase.com/) continue to mount in courts throughout the country, Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has found that robotic surgery complications associated with the da Vinci Surgical System have more than doubled in the past year. According to Bloomberg.com, a survey of physicians conducted by the agency also found that there exist no consistent methods for training surgeons in the use of the da Vinci. According to the FDA, all of the doctors responding to the agency survey asserted that training was an issue, and they reported incidents in which the arms of the da Vinci robot collided or missed a mark. However, because of the small size of the survey, the FDA did not reach any conclusions regarding the functioning of the robot, Bloomberg.com said. *

“Many of the robotic surgery injuries detailed in the FDA report echo allegations made in da Vinci robot lawsuits. We are pleased to see that the agency is taking note of these issues,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing the victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free legal reviews of potential da Vinci lawsuits to individuals who allegedly suffered serious robotic surgery complications in procedures where the da Vinci Surgical System was used.

Robotic Surgery Complications
The FDA report revealed that the agency’s adverse event database had received 3,697 reports related to the da Vinci surgical system through November 3, 2013. In 2012, it received 1,595 reports of robotic surgery complications. The 11 doctors included in the agency’s survey, each of whom had performed between 70 to 600 da Vinci operations each, said they had observed a number of injuries while using the device, including reversible limb palsy, temporary nerve damage in the fingers, seromas in obese patients, bleeding from perforated bowels, urethral stricture/stenosis, and peripheral vision loss.

According to the Bloomberg.com report, Intuitive Surgical, Inc., the manufacturer of the robot, has been named a defendant in at least 50 da Vinci robot lawsuits filed on behalf of patients who were allegedly injured by the device. In a regulatory filing issued by Intuitive Surgical last month, the company stated that many of the da Vinci lawsuits allege that patient injuries were the result of defects in the da Vinci Surgical System and/or failure on the Company’s part to provide adequate training resources to the healthcare professionals who performed the surgeries.**

This is not the first time the FDA has raised concerns about potential robotic surgery complications associated with the da Vinci. In July, the FDA issued a warning letter to Intuitive Surgical after agency inspectors determined that it hadn’t adequately reported device corrections and patient adverse events in some cases.***

Individuals allegedly injured by the da Vinci Surgical System may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and other damages.
