The book is a western novel with soul, wit and insight into human nature.

Author Dale A. Smith brings the early years of the American Southwest to life in his debut western novel, “Free to Wander” (published by Abbott Press).

It is 1861, and the Civil War is just beginning. Desperate to escape the violence, Jimmy Carl Gray and Lew McManus flee west in search of silver and peace, but when a Texas brigade invades the New Mexican territory, they are forced into the Confederate Army.

Jimmy and Lew face the war together as they charge into battles and face a seemingly unending stream of violence. Their travels throughout the Southwest lead them to encounters with Native Americans, invading Texans, independent women and a wise miner from Colorado, who assures them that they are not alone in their quest for peace.

“The book is a western novel with soul, wit and insight into human nature,” says Smith. “It is also historical fiction that shows the reader the early west in its early formative years.”

Smith has recently finished the sequel to “Free to Wander,” titled “The Beloved Captive.” He plans to release it in the near future.
