Author Dale J. Satterthwaite invites readers to come into the cockpit on B-25 missions to Italy and France during 1944 in his new memoir, “Truth Flies with Fiction” (published by Archway Publishing), where the air war comes alive.

Satterthwaite states, “The most amazing year of my life was spent as a B-25 bomber pilot based in Italy and Corsica during 1944. My fellow airmen fought pitched battles against very dangerous and committed forces.”

Satterthwaite’s memoir is partially comprised of letters he sent to his fiancée, which he believes will enrich the reader’s sense of being present during such momentous times. In his B-25 pilot memoir, Satterthwaite also discusses how he served alongside Joseph Heller, the eventual author of “Catch-22.” Heller's novel is famous for its fanciful and satirical portrayal of the events that both officers were part of.

Satterthwaite was an amateur photographer and took many pictures of squadron activities, which he includes in his memoir. He also photographed B-25 nose art, which graced their airplanes, the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, which destroyed their airbase at Pompeii, the massive damage from a Luftwaffe attack on their Corsica base, and off-duty flights to Rome, Florence, Cairo, Alexandria, and Tel Aviv.
