Philadelphia Personal Injury Lawyer Randall C. Flager Comments On Pennsylvania Drug Overdose Death Statistics
Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) November 12, 2013 -- Philadelphia personal injury attorney Randall C. Flager of Flager & Associates, PC today said drug manufacturers must do more to keep consumers safe in the wake of a recent study showing Philadelphia has the 14th highest rate of drug overdose deaths in the nation.
CBS Philly (“Pa. Ranked 14th In Number of Prescription Drug Overdose Deaths”) reported on October 7 that Washington-based Trust for America’s Heath found that the state had 15.3 overdose deaths per 100,000 people in 2010, primarily involving prescription drugs. The report raises concerns over drug safety, Flager said.
“Pharmaceutical companies that manufacture and market drugs have a duty to alert consumers and doctors about any potential risks,” said Flager, whose firm represents victims of negligence and families who lost loved ones due to negligence. “Drug companies have an obligation to properly warn users of potential side effects and hazards linked to using their products, including acute liver damage and death.”
According to CBS Philly, the state’s drug overdose rate represented an 89 percent increase from 1999, when 8.1 drug deaths per 100,000 people were reported.
In addition, the CBS Philly report stated that the trust found Pennsylvania to be one of 28 states that received low scores for implementing strategies to prevent prescription drug abuse.
“Unfortunately, addiction is often only part of the problem when analyzing fatal drug overdose statistics. Watchdog organizations such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as well as independent studies have found that common prescription and over-the-counter medication could lead to an accidental overdose, acute liver failure, and other unadvertised side effects,” said Flager, a wrongful death attorney in Philadelphia. “If a drug manufacturer knows about such studies, it needs to provide all of this information to doctors and consumers. People need to make informed decisions, especially when it literally could be a matter of life and death.”
Flager said anyone who has lost a loved one because of an accident prescription drug overdose should contact an attorney. A personal injury lawyer can help pursue compensation and closure for families who have lost loved ones due to negligence.
