Johnson City Personal Injury Lawyer Evan Meade Weighs In On The Use Of Unapproved Prescription Drugs
Johnson City, TN (PRWEB) July 16, 2013 -- In the wake of a recent court ruling ordering Johnson City physicians to pay nearly $5 million to resolve false claims allegations, personal injury attorney Evan Meade says the use of unapproved drugs could have serious negative health effects on patients.
“Doctors who administer prescription drugs from non-FDA approved sources put their patients at immediate risk. These counterfeit, misbranded medications run a higher risk of not only being ineffective at treating a condition, but might potentially cause adverse health effects in the patients,” said Meade, whose firm represents victims of negligence.
According to a Knoxville Daily Sun Report (“Johnson City physicians to pay $4.25 million to resolve false claims allegations,” July 2), doctors from a Johnson City cancer clinic purchased and administered non-FDA approved chemotherapy drugs at various points from 2007 through 2012.
The article states that the drugs were purchased from Canada by way of other foreign countries and for much lower prices than their name brand counterparts. Doctors then fraudulently filed claims for the drugs to Medicare and other government based health programs.
Furthermore, the article alleges that some of the drugs purchased from foreign sources had labels written in different languages and lacking proper dosage information, potentially putting patients at risk to be misprescribed an improper medication or dosage.
“It’s rightfully expected that doctors make decisions with the best interests of their patients in mind. When this is not the case and a doctor is looking out for his or her best interests instead, patients are immediately put at risk,” said Meade, a drug injury lawyer in Tennessee. “Dangerous drugs can have dangerous side effects. When a doctor prescribes a drug that isn’t approved by the FDA, you might have grounds for a lawsuit.”
