The Orange County-based plastic surgeon comments on a recent article that the benefits of going to a fully qualified plastic surgeon are priceless.

Certification by the ASPS should be a must when considering a plastic surgeon, says Dr. Michael A. Jazayeri.

With medical tourism on the rise, prospective patients need to know that the numerous risks that often come with it make for a very poor bargain.

An August 1st article on CTV News reported on the dangers of medical tourism and the very possible high cost of going abroad for cheap plastic surgery. The article followed several women who chose to receive cosmetic procedures in the Dominican Republic because the cost abroad was a fraction of what they would have paid in their native Canada. They returned with poor results and complications that took some time to resolve. Orange County-based plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Jazayeri says that, with medical tourism on the rise, prospective patients need to know that the numerous risks that often come with it make for a very poor bargain.

Dr. Jazayeri notes that, while the price of going abroad for plastic surgery may seem like a thrifty move on the surface, the costs that can follow due to the need for corrections or to deal with complications may end up being far more than simply having the procedure done correctly at home. Patients looking to cut down on costs by visiting questionable practitioners in nations with more lax regulations than the US are gambling with their safety and even life – and they are also risking results that are disappointing or worse, says Dr. Jazayeri. The doctor says those who choose a cheap surgery often end up needing more than one or more additional procedures to fix a mistake. He notes that he himself regularly performs procedures such as breast revisions. While these procedures are often successful, says Dr. Jazayeri, prevention is always preferable, and cheaper, than cure.

Even at home, the Southern California surgeon adds that individuals considering plastic surgery or any cosmetic procedure should only go to a board-certified plastic surgeon. Like Dr. Jazayeri, board-certified surgeons are trained in the field of plastic surgery. While this is not the case for all doctors who provide cosmetic procedures, plastic surgeons require additional training to hold the title. To be board-certified, they then must pass a rigorous examination by the most important plastic surgeons’ organization, he says. Dr. Jazayeri adds that going to a board-certified plastic surgeon for a procedure ensures that the doctor has the proper training and expertise to safely carry out these procedures, offering patients peace of mind knowing they will receive the enhancements they’re looking for by a surgeon specifically trained to do so.
