The suspicious death of an entomology professor sets the atmosphere of The Bukwas. This gripping new novel by up and coming author Dan Jamieson is a heady mix of unforgettable characters, age-old Kwakiutl lore and daredevil suspense.

The story introduces Jeff Sims, a cop who finds himself on the brink of suicide when he is forced to retire from his position because of his age. In his last weeks on the job, an entomology professor, who claims to have discovered a giant insect, is brutally murdered. Simms suspects that the professor’s graduate student, Brent Harchuck, is involved.

Things take an unexpected turn when both Simms and Harchuck encounter the bug in the flesh. The two must now join forces to capture the reclusive creature and hopefully get the answers that they seek. Jamieson, the compelling narrator, guides readers alongside his protagonists on an exhilarating quest through Campbell River, the mountains rising along the spine of Vancouver Island, and, finally, to the novel’s stunning conclusion.

Heralding the arrival of a gifted new literary voice, The Bukwas is at once a relentless chase through the shadowy realms of legend and a spine-tingling mystery. In the undercurrents lie the enormously significant issues of environmental destruction, species extinction and the psychological pressure of living in an age of monumental change.
