DataVeil 3 Brings Enhanced Data Masking Capabilities & Ease of Use
Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) June 02, 2016 -- DataVeil static data masking software version 3 has been released. Key new features are enhanced sensitive data discovery with automatic mask generation and reporting capabilities.
Static data masking, also known as persistent data masking, refers to a process of permanently replacing sensitive data with non-sensitive data in a copy of the original database. Typically the replacement data is realistic with similar characteristics of the original data. For example, customer names, contact details and account numbers are replaced with realistic but fictitious data. This enables the masked copy of the database to be used in non-secure environments for purposes such as testing, development, training and analytics without the data privacy and security concerns of the original sensitive database. It should be noted that static data masking is quite different to dynamic data masking that is offered by some other software products.
DataVeil version 3 provides improved sensitive data discovery with automatic mask generation and reporting capabilities. According to DataVeil Technologies CEO Terry Swiatkiwsky, “Although most people understand the need for data security and privacy, a common barrier to the adoption of data masking is the perception that it is too difficult, costly or time consuming to implement. We have therefore been focused on evolving a highly effective data masking solution to make the process as simple as possible that is easy to implement, operate and maintain. Reporting capabilities are also provided to assist with compliance obligations.”
The enhanced discovery features of DataVeil go beyond simple pattern matching by incorporating additional tests such as check digit verification and data semantic validations to produce more accurate discovery results. Typically, sensitive data discovery tools rely solely on pattern-based matching, such as regular expressions, which have a propensity to report an increased number of false positives.
Using the actual discovery result, DataVeil can automatically create and configure the data masks. This process can be viewed in a video demonstration.
Other features that enhance usability:
- Data masking preview window. This will show you what the masked data will look like, side-by-side with the original data, before committing to actually overwriting the sensitive data. You can also review the masked data after a data masking process has completed.
- Upon executing a data masking project, masking reports are automatically generated and saved along with the project containing the actual mask definitions. Email notifications with optional report attachments can also be configured.
- Smart masks. Many of the masks contain smart features. For example, the Person First Name mask can automatically identify the gender of a name (for English names) and replace the original name with a randomized name of the same gender. Furthermore, the Person Full Name mask can identify whether the family name appears in the first or last position in a field, and synchronize the masked values with other independent fields such as Preferred Name. For example, if the Full Name field was “Smith, John James” was masked to “Miller, Eric Frank” and the original Preferred Name field contained “John” then DataVeil would correctly synchronize the masked value of this field with “Eric” too.
- Bulk mask creation. Although DataVeil has the capability to automatically create masks directly from a sensitive data discovery result, the user can also create masks manually. This includes the convenience of applying a single mask definition to multiple fields in one quick step.
