New book defines proper understanding of church as body of Christ, rather than house of worship.

“The Church is the people of God who gather for the purposes of God and are on a mission with God. The Church is to be the visible expression of God’s presence in the world – manifested primarily in love.”

Author David E. Bish says church means a lot of different things to different people. In his new book, “I Don't Go to Church: (I Am the Church)” (published by WestBow Press), he offers readers what he says is a proper understanding of Jesus and his church, hoping to make it more appealing to those outside of it, and more powerful to those who are a part of it.

“I want readers to see the Church for the glorious, powerful, beautiful expression of God’s love and presence in the world that Jesus had in mind when He commenced it,” Bish says. “And whether they go to church or don’t go to church – I want them to embark on the incredible adventure of being the Church.”

Bish writes from an experiential point of view as the lead pastor of his congregation, adopting a conversational tone. He shares the message of what the Church really is and what the Church is really supposed to do. He hopes to revolutionize readers’ perception of the Church and ignite excitement about it.

“The Church isn’t a building, a program, an institution, an organization or even a religion,” Bish says. “The Church is the people of God who gather for the purposes of God and are on a mission with God. The Church is to be the visible expression of God’s presence in the world – manifested primarily in love.”
