It is three days until Christmas. As the clock ticks slower than usual, Gracie, Natalie and Ella wonder if Santa Claus will ever arrive. Thankfully, Bernard, the family’s beagle, is about to come to the rescue.
In Deborah K. Wright’s “Bernard, the Christmas Beagle” (published by Lulu), three little girls learn the fictionalized story of their beagle’s journey as he attempts to help the shepherds during the first Christmas.
The children’s book offers young readers a fun way to learn about the origin of Christmas. The story “reminds us to slow down and enjoy what is important,” says Wright.
The narrative also touches upon how important stories are in bringing a family closer together. In the book, when the girls start to worry, their father tells them a story about how Bernard played an important role on the first Christmas: He used his hunting skills to lead the shepherds to baby Jesus.
An excerpt from “Bernard, the Christmas Beagle”:
The baby turned to him and smiled. His little hands waved in the air, and Bernard thought maybe it would be all right if he came closer. He put his head on his paws, scrunched his body up, and inched forward to the bottom of the stick cradle where the baby’s feet kicked in the air.
