Harlingen, TX (PRWEB) January 31, 2014 -- The Dental Assistant Training School of the Rio Grande Valley (DATS/Rio Grande Valley) provides a new and innovative course in dental assisting. The DATS program is an exciting, fast-paced program that allows a student to start a new career after the two-month course. The next course starts on February 25th and there are still openings for new applicants.

Per the US. Department of Labor, employment of dental assistants is projected to grow 25 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. Ongoing research linking oral health and general health will likely continue to increase the demand for preventive dental services. The median pay is reported as $34,500 per year/$16.59 per hour.

What makes DATS different is that students work with practicing dentists and experienced dental assistants in an actual dental office. DATS is part of Harlingen Family Dentistry, a large and successful dental practice in the Rio Grande Valley. Students are exposed to a wide range of techniques, materials and dental knowledge required for success in a career as a dental assistant. Students obtain the on-the-job skills that practicing dentists see as “core necessities” for getting a job.

Some examples of the DATS course learning objectives consist of the principles and techniques of the following:

Patient reception
Taking patient vital signs and reviewing their medical history
Dental materials and instruments
The importance of sterilization and infection control
Oral hygiene and preventive care instruction
Radiology
Taking dental impressions
Charting
Computer entry of patient data
Teeth identification: primary and permanent dentition
OSHA regulations
CPR training
Dental Anatomy & Physiology

DATS class size is small, only up to 15 students per class. The small class size helps to ensure every student understands the program and is given personal attention.

Program classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Training hours are held Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
