Dr. Kanani, Woodland Hills Dentist: 4 Reasons Why Patients Need Individual Dental Care
Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) July 06, 2013 -- A recent Journal of Dental Research (JDR) study shows more of a difference between high and low risk patients than just regular cleanings. According to Dr. Kanani, a cosmetic dentist Woodland Hills area of California, the New York Times gave 4 good reasons for “Rethinking The Twice-Yearly Dental Visit” on June 10, 2013 (well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/06/10/rethinking-the-twice-yearly-dentist-visit/). There's more in going to the dentist than just getting cleanings and check-ups, because a patient should be spending more time on their own teeth than their dentist, says Dr. Kanani.
1. It's not just whether you get cleaned every 6 months, what happens when you clean at home is a bigger factor in tooth loss and dental implant cost s, said the Woodland Hills dentist. The New York Times mentioned that one of the missing factors in the JDR study (of over 5,000 insurance claims) was a mention of the importance of oral hygiene, which could certainly be a risk factor in whether or not a patient eventually needed to have teeth replaced, or worked on.
2. Two of the biggest risk factors for periodontitis and dental implants cost, as shown in the New York Times, included smoking and diabetes. Both of these health issues can lead to either damaged teeth or the need to replace them, said Dr. Kanani, adding that it doesn't help if the family history also shows a genetic tendency toward weak enamel or oral disease.
3. Genetics can play a role in risk factors, said the New York Times, but also warned that research done on a link between the interleukin-1 gene and periodontal disease only has “some” studies behind it. The real difference seemed to come down to whether or not a dental patient was in the high risk or low risk category, depending on lifestyle and genetics. Statistics mentioned in the article showed 50% of adults at age 30 or lower (65 million) showing some form of inflammation and gum disease that could lead to lost teeth and dental implants. Also, there seemed to be no statistical difference between individuals in the low-risk group who visited their dentist once or twice during the year. There was a 5% increase in tooth extraction for high-risk patients who only had annual dental visits.
4. The need for individual dental care was mentioned twice in the New York Times, and Dr. Kanani agrees that a one-size-fits-all approach won't work long-term. Going to the same dentist, with a knowledge of an individual's past history and tendencies, would appear to be a prevention advantage. Dr. Kanani adds that he offers tooth whitening and sedation, along with up-to-date technology that help keep tooth replacement relaxing.
