Metal-on-metal hip implants continue be the focus of safety concerns, as the DePuy Pinnacle hip lawyers ( at Bernstein Liebhard LLP note that the devices were recently a subject of discussion at the Current Concepts in Joint Replacement Winter Meeting. According to, the meeting featured a presentation by Dr. Lawrence D. Dorr, MD, during which he advised that all-metal hip patients should be considered for revision surgery if they experience elevated metal ion levels above 10 parts per billion, or loosening of the acetabular cup confirmed via either clinical symptoms or x-ray, Other possible indicators include soft tissue masses in the groin or anterior hip, as well as shortness of breath and memory loss or other cognitive changes that could be symptomatic of cobalt poisoning. *

Metal-on-Metal Hip Complications
In 2011, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) began a review of metal-on-metal hip implants, amid concerns that the devices could shed dangerous amounts of metal debris, leading to serious complications and premature device failure. In January 2013, the FDA announced that its review indicated that all-metal hips were associated with higher rates of early failure compared to those composed of other materials, and advised patients to undergo medical screening, including blood tests for elevated metal ion levels, if they experienced any symptoms that might be indicative of a failing hip implant.

Court documents indicate that more than 7,000 DePuy Pinnacle hip lawsuits involving a metal-on-metal version of the device that utilizes the Ultamet liner are currently pending in a federal multidistrict litigation underway in U.S. District Court, Northern District of Texas. Many of the claims included in the proceeding similarly allege that the implant’s all-metal design caused recipients to experience elevated metal ion levels, loosening of the device, and other serious complications that resulted in the need for revision surgery within just a few years of implantation. Jeffrey S. Grand, a partner with Bernstein Liebhard LLP, is serving on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee for the federal proceeding. (In re: DePuy Orthopaedics Inc.
