With the 3D copier from 3D Fabrication Technologies, Sonar Medical can do rapid design iterations without the costs and delays associated with conventional tooling to manufacture a hundred physical prototypes for beta testing.

Sonar Medical is developing a revolutionary diagnostic device that detects dental problems for dental professionals who work in mobile clinics without access to X-ray equipment or whose patients do not wished to be exposed to X-ray radiation.
Sonar Medical looked into rapid prototyping technologies available to it, and decided to use a combination of a 3D printer and a 3D copier from 3D Fabrication Technologies of San Jose, CA to quickly develop its products.
Chief Clinical Officer Ross J. Miller, DDS MS, notes that "We use 3D Fabrication Technologies’ 3D copier to significantly reduce our product development time frame. The ability to quickly send out tens or hundreds of each prototype allows the company to increase visualization capability during the early phases of design where testers can actually use the test designs and detect design flaws before the manufacture of tooling for production runs. With the 3D copier from 3D Fabrication Technologies, Sonar Medical can do rapid design iterations without the costs and delays associated with conventional tooling to manufacture the physical prototypes where only hundreds of test units are needed for beta testing."
“We pride ourselves on our ability to develop unique, user-friendly medical device products,” says Dr. Miller. "3D Fabrication Technologies’ 3D copier technology uses environmentally-friendly materials, and the quick turn-around enables us to make low volume copies of our prototype so that we can quickly test our designs for ergonomics" notes Dr. Miller. Sonar Medical expects to use the 3D copier to identify design changes before commitments are made to expensive production tooling so that the company can save expenses and delays associated with modifying the final tools.
Sonar Medical also uses patent workflow solutions from PowerPatent Inc. to enable Sonar Medical to file quickly and benefit from the first-inventor-to-file provision of the American Invents Act (AIA) through the provisional and utility patent application process.
