CHERRY HILL, N.J., May 30, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The 20th annual Global Finals, hosted by Destination Imagination (DI) ended Saturday with teams from 38 states and 17 countries–including China, Mexico, Poland, Canada and the United States–showcasing their creativity through a series of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math), improvisational and service learning challenges. Students from Texas, California China and others earned the first place trophy in their respective categories.
More than 17,000 participants and supporters attended the tournament, which took place in Kansas City, Missouri. Destination Imagination teams worked diligently for several months on their challenge solutions and those who placed in the top tier at regional and state/country level tournaments earned a spot to compete at Global Finals–the culminating competition of the DI season.
Throughout the four-day event, teams in elementary, middle, secondary and university levels competed in one of six competitive challenges: Technical, Scientific, Structural, Fine Arts, Improvisational and Service Learning.
"Each season, we introduce new and exciting project-based challenges that test students' creative thinking, problem-solving and collaboration skills," said Michele Tuck-Ponder, Executive Director of Destination Imagination, Inc. "Our Global Finals event, however, is more than a competition. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience that provides students with the opportunity to meet students from around the world, learn about other cultures, and participate in workshops to help them gain new skills or explore their passions."
The action-packed week of festivities included more than 100 free workshops for students, the ability to train like an astronaut with U.S. Space & Rocket Center, a Rube Goldberg machine challenge, virtual reality games and more.
