DHL Express Enhances Customer Service and Delivery Solutions to Meet 2018 Holiday Season Volume

• Expects international shipping volumes to increase 17 percent over 2017

DHL Express, the world's leading express shipping and logistics provider, today announced a new service feature that helps both customers and future shipping recipients customize their delivery options ahead of time for all of their incoming deliveries. The service launches just in time for what is forecasted to be a record holiday season in terms of orders shipped.

DHL On Demand Delivery service, which was initially developed in response to significant growth in premium cross-border e-commerce volumes, allows shippers to activate specific delivery options and have DHL Express notify package recipients via email or text of a shipment's progress. Now even those who don't have yet a shipment in progress can subscribe and have their delivery preferences set for all future shipments. DHL Express can then match their contact information to their preferences, and deliver their package as already specified by the recipient.

"E-commerce shipping is now driven to a large extent by the consumer and the customer experience at the destination," said Greg Hewitt, CEO for DHL Express U.S. "That's why our focus is also on enabling customers receiving shipments to make decisions on a delivery that fits their schedule. Customers want easy, convenient and fast, and this new feature allows for a pre-set that saves time when defining how the delivery will be made." DHL Express is forecasting a shipment volume growth of about 17 percent over 2017 for this peak holiday season. Cyber Monday is the peak pickup day for DHL in the United States, and the high shipping volumes continue through Christmas. Peak delivery day for DHL is December 17.

Before the start of peak season, DHL Express surveyed U.S. e-commerce businesses, including its customers, and found they were expecting an increase of between 20 and 40 percent in their sales on Cyber Monday. DHL has prepped its operations to meet the growing role of e-commerce in the retail sector and mitigate operational challenges for both the retail and logistics industries. 

DHL Express also introduced upgrades to other service capabilities, among them additional flights recently launched to key countries in North and South America. They include a new direct flight from Miami to Bogota, Colombia, and another from the DHL Americas Hub at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) directly to Vancouver, Canada. DHL shippers or recipients in the U.S. this season can also use two popular virtual assistant platforms – Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant – to quickly and conveniently monitor the status of their packages and documents.

In the past six months, DHL Express also expanded its facilities in Tucson, Arizona; Ontario, California; Baltimore, Maryland; and Charleston, South Carolina; in addition to opening a new service center in Sunnyvale, California. Much of these expansions are in response to the growth of international e-commerce.
