More change has occurred in agricultural and rural life in my lifetime than in the past two centuries.

In his 2007 book of short stories “A Harvest of Memories: Rural Ireland From the '30s To Present Times” (published by Trafford Publishing), Dick Jeffers reminds readers of a gentler, simpler way of life. “A Harvest of Memories” has also just been selected for inclusion in the Gold Seal [Gold Seal] program, which recognizes excellence in writing and overall potential.

“A Harvest of Memories” is written as part entertainment and part social history. “More change has occurred in agricultural and rural life in my lifetime than in the past two centuries,” Jeffers says.

In the short story, “The Hungry Thirties,” Jeffers offers a brief explanation of the Hungry Thirties both abroad and at home, explaining why the shortage of money didn’t prevent people from living and enjoying themselves in spite of its absence. The tale, “A Settin’ of Eggs,” relates how important the money earned from selling eggs was to one farmer’s wife, who learns how it doesn’t pay to get too greedy.

The warm and witty read, “A Harvest of Memories” is sure to appeal to older readers on a nostalgic level, as well as younger readers interested in social history.
