Documentary on the First Female Assistant Police Chief in the Nation to Premiere March 7th at the Senator John Heinz History Center
A new documentary by InterVue Productions about police legend Therese Rocco will be premiering at the Senator John Heinz History Center, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, on March 7 at 7 p.m.
PITTSBURGH, March 6, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Therese Rocco: The Rock—a documentary spotlighting the celebrated career of the first woman in the country to become an assistant police chief—features interviews with Rocco and law enforcement luminaries such as forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht, Sheriff William Mullen and Police Chief Ophelia Coleman. In addition, this documentary includes never-before-told stories from individuals who were abducted as children and later reunited with their families.
Rocco, who was the daughter of Italian immigrants, grew up in Pittsburgh's Hill District and started her career in 1948 as a clerk in the Pittsburgh Police Missing Persons Department. Rocco went on to become a nationally acclaimed investigator who was credited with establishing protocols for the investigation of missing children cases. Her tireless efforts helped to save the lives of countless numbers of children.
During her career, Rocco also was promoted to many high-ranking leadership positions and helped pave the way for future generations of women police officers to advance their own careers. She is credited with breaking through the "blue" glass ceiling for women on the police force. Following her retirement in 2004, Rocco continues to collaborate with the police on missing persons cases to this present day. As a former public speaker for the police force, she continues to
speak to college and high school students sharing her experiences and challenges.
Rocco published her memoir Therese Rocco in 2017 where she details her career, the many missing persons cases investigated and how she navigated her way through discriminating times in a male-dominated field.
"Therese Rocco is an inspiration for women who are persevering to break through the glass ceiling in law enforcement and many other fields," said Sharon Liotus, producer of Therese Rocco: The Rock and president of InterVue Productions. "She has also been called a guardian angel for missing children and their families. We are excited that Therese will now be able to share her unique story in this new documentary."
"Over 40 years on the Pittsburgh Police Force have left me with many special memories," said Rocco. "They are all a testament to what I consider to have been an incredibly challenging but ultimately rewarding career. This documentary gives me the opportunity to tell what life was like for women breaking into law enforcement during the later half of the 20th century."
Following the film, there will be a question & answer session with Rocco. In addition, Rocco will sign copies of her memoir Therese Rocco, which will be available for purchase.
