Written as a memoir, His Mercy Endureth describes the writer’s difficulties following her diagnosis of a rare cancer, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Donna Handy Hussey, herself a nursing professional, suddenly found herself becoming the patient that nurses care for in the cancer unit. This memoir partakes of her professional career and is specific to her situation, making it a book about cancer treatment that is knowledgeable and familiar with the medical establishment. It is also distinguished by the author’s eleven year journey, a rare human interest story that shares an affliction with the 12.7 million people in the world diagnosed with cancer every year.
Donna Handy Hussey writes very candidly about her difficulties following a diagnosis of a rare cancer. She details the various stages of her symptoms and treatment, as well as other life-changing events that present themselves along her journey. Her book, being a memoir, briefly describes her childhood then narrates her entry into the medical establishment by enrolling as nurse in a well-known Jamaican school for nurses. She tells of separation anxiety when she finally leaves her native island to marry and join her best friend Trevor in Brooklyn. The book though mainly happens in New Jersey, her adoptive home state.
His Mercy Endureth shows how the heart endures the hardships involved in cancer treatment. Donna Hussey is also a true medical professional, whose temperament and attitude make her an ideal nurse. Her book achieves an objectivity that helps in accepting cancer as a medical condition to be hurdled or survived. Being a survivor of a rare type of cancer is in itself a great personal accomplishment. The author says that, “I have wondered why my life was spared despite being written off on several occasions…My ability to deal with so much adversity is due to my spirituality and faith in a kind and loving God who has promised to be with us always. No one knows what the future holds, but I can face tomorrow knowing that His Mercy Endureth!”
