Dufour Seminars Hosts Cal/OSHA Compliance & Inspection Management Webinar
Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) March 17, 2014 -- Dufour Seminars announces that they will be hosting a webinar on Cal/OSHA Compliance & Inspection Management. It will take place from 9 a.m. – noon on March 19 and will cover Cal/OSHA inspections, citation issuance and the appeals process, as well as recent changes in the law and how they will affect businesses.
Recent data available from osha.gov’s inspection database indicates that in the last 12 months to-date, California OSHA (Cal/OSHA) has assessed $44.7 million in penalties. This eclipses the previous highest year at $30 million by a 50 percent increase. (https://www.dir.ca.gov/dosh/citation.html)
What is even more remarkable is that federal OSHA, which enforces its standards in 29 states without state-approved private sector enforcement programs, assessed $145 million in penalties. This sum is only three times Cal/OSHA’s penalties, which is significantly out of proportion to population and employment. (The states under federal jurisdiction include populous and industrialized states like New York, Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Illinois, Florida and Massachusetts).
This increasing punitive trend is due to changes in California law, which dramatically increased penalties for serious citations, and a liberalized definition of serious violation that results in more such citations and makes them harder to appeal. To make matters worse, Cal/OSHA is expanding its field staff by adding approximately 20 inspectors and will be changing the definition of a repeat violation to state-wide versus establishment and expanding the time limit from three to five years.
Those responsible for OSHA compliance at a workplace in California cannot afford to be blindsided by a Cal/OSHA inspection and its consequences.
