Diana Duncan’s book shares little girl’s amusing story of overdressing her dog

an amusing rhyming story about a little girl who loves dressing her dog up.

Diana Duncan lives in Hong Kong and often, she laughs at the way people dress their dogs in all sorts of outlandish costumes; booties, gumboots, knitted vests, even tutus. It inspired her to write “Dressing Basil Up and Down” (published by Partridge Singapore in September of 2015), an amusing rhyming story about a little girl who loves dressing her dog up.

Set for a new marketing campaign, the book tells the story of a young girl named Matilda who loves dressing up her long-suffering dog, Basil. In a series of silly costumes – Basil might be a ballerina in a tutu one day; the next, Spiderman. One day, her mom takes Matilda to the zoo and paints a picture with words, helping Matilda see how silly the animals in the zoo would look if they were all dressed up.

Enjoyment, an appreciation of rhyme and an empathy with the main character in the story is what Duncan wants readers to take away from writing the book. She would like to remind readers that animals are beautiful just as they are - and certainly do not need to be dressed up in silly, uncomfortable clothes.

An excerpt from the book:
That night when the moon is all golden and splendid,
Matilda announces, 'Dog Dress-Up Days now have ended.'
But sometimes at night, when Basil lies snoring,
She slips on his crown, but just till the morning.
