This study is illustrative of the fact that, across all age groups, bariatric surgery can have an incredibly powerful effect on mental health.

According to an article published August 3rd on Healio, a study conducted out of the University of Sweden showed that most adolescents who underwent bariatric surgery “felt significantly better two years after surgery.” The article goes on to explain that, on average, the 88 adolescent bariatric patients who participated in the study felt that their “mental health had been normalized” at the point when the follow-up examination was conducted. Los Angeles bariatric surgeon Michael Feiz, M.D., F.A.C.S. of Dr. Feiz and Associates notes that, while bariatric surgery should only be considered in adolescents in cases where their weight is a serious danger to their health, this study is illustrative of the fact that, across all age groups, bariatric surgery can have an incredibly powerful effect on mental health.
One of the main reasons for this phenomenon, explains Dr. Feiz, is that weight loss surgery gives some patients a sense of control over their health and their future that they had never experienced before. Anyone suffering from obesity who has tried numerous diet and exercise regimens, only to lose an insufficient amount of weight or to have the weight come back, knows how frustrating the task of losing weight can be. Dr. Feiz notes that, for many patients, obesity feels almost like a prison from which there is no escape. Yet, over the past decade, it has become increasingly clear that procedures such as the lap band or gastric sleeve are both safe and effective methods of helping patients lose weight.
Finally feeling like one has control over their future can provide an incredibly powerful physiological boost. Dr. Feiz also notes that, while weight loss procedures are by no means cosmetic, slimming down can be a very real boost to a person’s confidence in regards to their appearance and how they are perceived by the world. While Dr. Feiz often reminds his patients that escaping obesity should not be viewed as a cure-all for all of life’s problems, this study, in addition to the hundreds of patients whose results Dr. Feiz has seen personally, shows that better mental health may well follow a successful weight loss with bariatric surgery.
Dr. Feiz concludes by saying that it is important to remember that all patients are different and there are no guaranteed results. Yet, all a prospective patient needs to do is look at the before and after pictures of many of Dr. Feiz’s patients to know that, with a skilled and knowledgeable surgeon, life-changing results truly are possible.
