Recent Study Strengthens the Ties between Diabetes and the Positive Effects of Weight Loss Surgery, Notes Dr. Michael Feiz
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 29, 2015 -- According to an article published September 9th by MD Magazine, patients with type 2 diabetes who elected weight loss surgery were shown to see improvements in their diabetes even when losing a relatively small amount of weight following their procedure. Citing a recent study published in Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics, the article explained that many of the patients who were classified as those that were not able to sustain meaningful weight loss after bariatric surgery still saw health benefits from the procedure. According to weight loss surgeon Michael Feiz, M.D., F.A.C.S., this study shows that those patients who may have previously considered their surgery a failure due to the fact that they only lost a small amount of weight, may very well have succeeded in improving their overall health. This is incredibly important, he adds, given that improved health is the ultimate goal of weight loss surgery.
While patients may certainly have largely cosmetic motivations to lose weight, Dr. Feiz explains that this study solidifies the fact that weight loss surgery is a medical procedure meant to treat conditions that are more than skin deep. In fact, he notes, more and more doctors have begun evaluating the success of weight loss surgery based on its effectiveness in controlling obesity’s related co-morbidities, rather than obesity in itself. He explains that insurance companies, which have been examining exactly which patients could benefit most from weight loss surgery, are becoming increasingly aware that the presence of comorbidities makes a candidate more worthy of coverage.
Another take-away from this study that Dr. Feiz finds particular important is that patients must stop considering themselves “failures” based on what they perceive to be insufficient results. He explains that it is natural for patients to have very high expectations for their own personal weight loss journey, and that not meeting those expectations can definitely be disappointing. Yet, he underlines the fact that losing weight is a means to a healthy future, and that good health can be achieved even if patients haven’t yet hit their ideal weight.
