High Speed Internet Access in Powell River: Sunshine Coast Health Center Support
The Gillies Bay Internet Society (GBIS) is a non-profit community group on Texada Island whose primary objective is to maintain an inexpensive wireless network for residents of the Gillies Bay area. GBIS was founded in 2008 with a small start-up grant from the Powell River Regional District (PRRD). At that time there was only dial-up or expensive satellite available. The grant enabled GBIS to make a wireless connection from Lasqueti Island to the Gillies Bay TV tower. This was successful in providing limited service to about fifty clients around Gillies Bay over the next three years. However, two problems existed: only houses with a clear view of the TV tower had a chance of service and bandwidth was limited as it was also shared with about eighty clients on Lasqueti through a link from Parksville to Lasqueti. The solution was for GBIS to build its own tower on Mt. Pocahontas overlooking the Gillies Bay area and attempt to get an independent service. To become independent meant finding a line-of-sight link to the tower from a location on the mainland with high-speed broadband service. Without this the system would not work. GBIS looked at various locations south of Powell River and was extremely fortunate to find that the Sunshine Coast Health Centre (SCHC) generously agreed to host the transmitting equipment.
