Car Accident Attorney Charles Cartwright Weighs In On Drunk Driver Sentencing
West Palm Beach, FL (PRWEB) July 27, 2013 -- Personal injury attorney Charles Cartwright of Gonzalez & Cartwright, P.A., said today a recent news story about the sentencing of a drunk driver serves as a reminder about the tragic consequences of drinking and driving.
A West Delray drunk driver was sentenced to 1 year in jail and 14 years probation and other conditions after his involvement in a Nov. 20, 2010, double fatal crash, according to a Sun Sentinel article (“West Delray drunken driver jailed in 2010 deaths of seniors,” July 7).
“According to the story, he will have to speak at Palm Beach County area high schools about the dangers of drinking and driving and using drugs while driving,” said Cartwright, who represents victims of negligence and families who lost loved ones in accidents. “While nothing can bring back the two senior citizens who died in the crash, the man whose negligence contributed to their deaths might help prevent future tragedies by telling his story to young people. It’s critically important that teenagers and young adults realize the consequences of driving drunk or under the influence of drugs.”
The article said that one of the victims who died was driving and failed to yield the right of way while taking a left turn. Accident reports said the intoxicated driver was speeding and failed to brake in time, hitting the front of their car. At the time of arrest, his blood alcohol level was revealed to be .09 and he also had the narcotic Oxycodone in his system, which investigators found were contributing factors in the accident, according to the Sun Sentinel.
In addition, the Sun Sentinel reported that the driver’s sentence will include 500 hours of community service and a $2,500 donation to the Mothers Against Drunk Driving organization. At the request of the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office, he also will have to speak to area high school students about the dangers of driving while intoxicated drivers and how his case has changed his life.
“Drunk driving is a serious criminal offense that can have tragic results, as this case illustrates,” said Cartwright, a car accident lawyer in West Palm Beach. “If you’ve fallen victim to a drunk driver and suffered personal injury or the loss of a loved one, you might have grounds for a lawsuit. A personal injury lawyer can help pursue compensation for your losses and help you send a message that negligent behavior will not be tolerated in our society.”
