Duane Acker Tells His Inspiring Success Story in New Memoir
Atlantic, Iowa (PRWEB) August 09, 2013 -- In his new memoir, “From Troublesome Creek: A Farm Boy’s Encounters on the Way to a University Presidency” (published by iUniverse), author Duane Acker traces his transformational journey from farm boy to president of a state university.
Acker grows up on a family farm, milking cows, harvesting hay and living a happy life as a farm boy in the 1930s and ’40s. When he wins a sizeable college scholarship, his life takes a dramatic turn. His college education evolves into a teaching career and university leadership roles. In “From Troublesome Creek,” he shares insights into the many fascinating experiences he lived along the way.
An excerpt from “From Troublesome Creek”:
“After coffee at the Frizzells kitchen table and a thirty-minute drive with Frizzell past his country school and some nearby farms, I headed on to Pierre. By evening, or at least within a week, I’m guessing that several in Frizzell’s circle of agricultural friends and his neighbors had learned that the new dean was credible; he had helped move irrigation pipe.”
Acker has lived a rich and fulfilling life of varied experiences, and he hopes his story dispels some myths about academia. “The life of an academic can be fascinating, and it is not removed from the realities of business, human relations and politics,” he says.
