“Californians will be surprised and concerned to learn our pet-friendly state is a trade partner with Guangdong, China -- the dog-eating capital of the world and largest supplier of dogs to Yulin’s Dog Eating Festival,” Andrea Gung, Duo Duo Project

On June 15, 2016, San Francisco based Duo Duo Project, an international advocacy organization will hold a press conference rally at 10am at the California capitol in Sacramento, bringing attention to the horrors of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival and entire dog meat trade. “Californians will be surprised and concerned to learn our pet-friendly state is a trade partner with Guangdong, China --the largest supplier of dogs to Yulin’s Dog Eating Festival,” says Andrea Gung, executive director, Duo Duo Project, referring to the "sister state” agreement California Governor Jerry Brown signed in 2014, with the Guangdong Province of China, pledging to strengthen ties in trade, technology, low-carbon development, environment conservation, clean energy, education and tourism. Guangdong is thought to supply as much as 40% of dogs and 70% of cats to Yulin festival. Duo Duo's petition to shut down Yulin Dog Meat Festival has over 2.5 million signatures making it the third most signed petition ever on Change.org.

Speak Up In Sacramento press conference rally includes award presentation to individuals who have raised the awareness of the dog and cat meat trade including California Assemblymember Richard Bloom (D) Santa Monica and former Assemblymember, Paul Fong. The rally concludes with Gung presenting Duo Duo’s "sister state" petition of over 100k names to Governor Brown urging him to “speak up” to Guangdong to end the dog and cat meat trade. Gung will also deliver a letter co-signed by Duo Duo Project and some of California’s most prominent animal anti-cruelty groups including Best Friends Animal Society, City of San Jose Animal Care and Services, Davey’s Voice, Ground Boots, Helen Woodward Animal Center, Humane Society Silicon Valley, Red Rover, Sacramento SPCA, San Diego Humane Society, San Francisco SPCA, State Humane Association of California, Dawn Danielson, Director County of San Diego Department of Animal Services and James Silveira, President and CEO Rancho Coastal Humane Society.
