New DuPont Air Duct Materials Reign in Turbo-Charged Environments
Geneva (PRWEB) October 15, 2015 -- DuPont Performance Polymers (DPP) responds to the automotive industry’s request for materials that can stand up to long term exposure to heat and gases in turbo-charged environments with DuPont™ Zytel® LCBM6301 and DuPont™ Hytrel® HTR8797.
Zytel® LCBM6301 is a long-chain blow molding PA612-HI polyamide grade with enhanced acid and thermal resistance versus flexible PA6 and better thermal resistance than PA12 targeted for flexible automotive air ducts, positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) tubes, and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) sensor tubes. The new grade fulfils auto industry calls for higher durability materials that can operate in the more aggressive temperatures and gases generated by the latest compact turbo charged diesel and gasoline engines, while helping to meet CO2 and NOx emissions limits.
Hytrel® HTR8797 TPC-ET is a flexible, blow-mouldable resin that more than doubles the 130°C -150°C air oven ageing durability of previous Hytrel® grades specified for cold side blow moulded auto air duct applications.
“Both Zytel® LCBM6301 and Hytrel® HTR8797 have been developed to answer the most recent automotive air induction challenges that ask tough questions of materials producers in terms of product durability in hot and chemically aggressive environments,” said Patrick Cazuc, automotive marketing leader, DuPont Performance Polymers. “At DuPont, product line improvement is a constant process and is part of our commitment to support the automotive industry in its quest to meet CO2 emissions targets. Blow moulding is a centre piece of our offering to automotive customers, especially for air management applications.
Extending the Portfolio
The introductions of Zytel® LCBM6301 and Hytrel® HTR8797 complement the industry’s broadest portfolio of rigid and flexible polymers and elastomers – ranging from rigid Zytel® polyamide, flexible Hytrel® TPC-ET and patented variable stiffness bellows (VSB) technology, DuPont™ Crastin® PBT, Vamac® elastomer, and Kevlar® and Nomex® brand fibres for reinforcement. These additions affirm DuPont’s leadership in polymer materials for auto air management system hoses and tubes. In addition, the company supports customers from art to part with FEA and CAD design expertise and full pilot 3D suction blow moulding production capabilities that replicate their own processing conditions, to speed prototyping, and produce finished parts for testing and qualification.
Both new Zytel® and Hytrel® products are process friendly, plasticiser-free grades for easy blow moulding processing on existing equipment, and are up to 50 percent recyclable without impacting final properties and productivity. In addition, either of the new grades can offer valuable lightweighting opportunities, enabling one integrated part to replace several metal/rubber/plastic components.

Graph highlights the enhanced resistance of DuPont Zytel® LCBM6301 PA612-HI to EGR and Blow-By acids compared to other flexible PA6-F and PA6/66-HI polyamide solutions for blow moulded air ducts. After ageing for 96 hours at 100°C in acetic acid 1M, Zytel® LCBM6301 exhibited significantly better retention of properties (strain at break, stress at 50 percent strain) without any surface blister defects.
