Oil & Gas Pipeline Spills Can Now Be Avoided Thanks to New Technology from Podium Energy
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) February 26, 2015 -- Alberta based Podium Energy, (http://www.podiumenergy.ca) announced that its revolutionary Earth Safe Pipeline system has the ability to eliminate the risk of pipeline oil spills, while also helping to reduce the industry’s reliance on costly and unsafe rail and road transportation. The company has been awarded U.S. and Canadian patents for its innovative technology, which unlike conventional acoustic and pressure based leak detection systems, can provide real-time, 24/7 spill notification and intrusion alert, along with pinpoint location accuracy and complete spill containment – regardless of the size of the leak.
Until now, a perfect leak detection system has not existed, since many alerts turn out to be false alarms, which can lead to big mistakes, as evidenced by the 2010 spill of 840,000 gallons of oil into Michigan’s Kalamazoo River that took operators 17 hours to confirm, or the 2013 pipeline rupture that was discovered by a farmer harvesting his wheat fields in North Dakota, that leaked 630,000 gallons of crude oil across an area the size of six football fields.
Installing more of the same ineffective monitoring and analysis equipment is not the answer. With just over half of U.S. pipelines having been installed prior to 1970, the question is not whether pipelines will rupture or leak, but rather how quickly can they be detected and contained when they do happen, so that no damage is done to the surrounding environment.
President Obama’s recent veto of the Keystone XL pipeline, along with other infrastructure bottlenecks are threatening to impede the oil booms underway in the U.S. and Canada. This has led to a massive increase in the amount of oil being transported by rail, which has created another problem – a significant rise in the number of oil tanker derailment tragedies like the recent ones in Mount Carbon, West Virginia, Timmins, Ontario and Lac Mégantic, Quebec. More spills and explosions mean more deaths, not to mention a greater risk of toxic chemicals infiltrating local water supplies.
“The Earth Safe Pipeline technology was developed in direct response to an urgent need to protect sensitive environments, such as aquifers used for drinking water and irrigation, while securing the safest possible transport of petroleum products across the United States, Canada and around the world,” said Jefferson Adler, President & CEO at Podium Energy Corp.
“Oil companies now have the ability to facilitate North America’s energy needs whilst ensuring real-time detection and accurate location of leaks, combined with the most effective fluid containment system available,” continued Mr. Adler. “It can detect even the smallest of leaks, as well as trauma to the exterior of the pipe, including corrosion cracks. This is a major improvement over existing acoustic and pressure based leak detection technology, whereby all pipeline releases accumulate in the environment until they are detected and the leak can be repaired.”
The Earth Safe Pipeline technology can be adapted or interconnected with existing pipeline structures, and can be powered by green or operator supplied energy sources to facilitate some of the most important resource pipeline projects both today and into the future. As long as we continue to rely on oil and gas as reliable and cost-effective sources of energy, shouldn’t we at least be ensuring that it is being transported in the safest way possible?
