EGE (Waste to Energy Agency) Provide Exclusive Interview in the Run Up to Energy from Waste 2014
London, Southwark (PRWEB UK) 20 September 2014 -- Right across Europe, existing power stations are being converted to be able to use waste as a fuel instead of coal. In the UK around a fifth of power stations are likely to close by 2020. The government is coming under increasing pressure not just to keep energy prices low, but to keep the lights on. EfW won’t plug the gap as a whole, but it has a major role to play.

SMi Group Speaks to Pal Mikkelsen, CEO, EGE (Waste to Energy Agency) regarding the challenges and regulations facing the Energy from Waste sector.
Interview Extract:
What are the main challenges facing the Energy from Waste sector in the EU?
"Low profitability due to poorly functioning markets [...] insufficient regulation and government control means that disposal continues to be the least expensive option for many EU countries [...] It is difficult to communicate and gain acceptance for the idea that waste energy is entirely renewable in the sense that it cannot be used elsewhere, and that this is the best way to utilise waste resources."
How do you think new regulations will affect Energy from Waste sector?
“New regulations and increased focus on recycled material will reduce the total amount of waste for treatment, but shifting waste away from disposal will improve conditions for energy recovery.”
What are the main challenges for funding EfW projects?
“Long-term profit in a poorly functioning waste market, with an unstable energy marked. [...] Technologies (recycling, sorting, biological, Energy from Waste) are competing when they should be cooperating. The various areas within Energy from Waste are also in competition (combustion grates, gasification, plasma). This impedes the development of the market and makes it more ambiguous for politicians and for capital.”
