The novel is inspired by Wellington’s own experience working in a traveling circus, offering an insider’s perspective. She explains, “In 1971, I ran away with a traveling circus at the age of seventeen. At the time, I was irresistibly drawn to a nomadic band of colorful circus people.”

After earning a Master of Arts from Johns Hopkins University and a doctorate from Boston University, she taught at Boston University, Simmons, Babson and Wellesley College.
