Main Street Dental Team, Unionville’s Most Innovative Dental Clinic, Announces Top Tips for Avoiding Emergency Dental Surgery This Holiday Season
Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) November 25, 2013 -- Main Street Dental Team (MainStreetDentalTeam.com), Unionville’s first full-time dental clinic, announces its top tips for avoiding emergency dental surgery this holiday season.
“The holidays are supposed to be an occasion where we spend time with family and friends celebrating. This often includes sugary cookies, hard candies, and other sweet treats,” says Dr. Harvey Schwartz, owner of Main Street Dental Team. “By taking a few proactive steps, revellers can avoid ending up with cavities or needed emergency dental work in January—which is often the case, because dental emergencies tend to peak around the holiday season.”
According to Dr. Schwartz, naturally occurring bacteria in the mouth feeds on sugary foods and drinks, creating acid as a by-product. This acid eats away the tooth enamel, making it weaker and eventually resulting in tooth decay. People are more susceptible to cavities and other damage when they are eating sugary snacks for an extended period of time, such as at a holiday party. The damaging acid that forms can affect teeth because it lasts for more than 20 minutes.
“The best way to enjoy the holidays and avoid cavities or other dental emergencies, such as a chipped tooth, is to practice good oral hygiene,” he says. “For starters, brushing and flossing your teeth after eating sugary snacks will certainly reduce bacteria. That said, not everyone brings a toothbrush with them to a party.”
While it’s almost impossible to avoid sugary foods or candy over the holidays, Dr. Schwartz notes, it’s important to know that it’s better to eat carbohydrate-rich foods as part of a meal than on their own. The body can neutralize acids before they harm the teeth when they are consumed with larger meals.
“Foods that take a long time to chew can also increase the chances for tooth decay to occur. Food that sticks to teeth, like raisins, soft candy, and pop, hold acid against enamel more than other food does. If you can’t avoid these foods, at least try to limit your consumption,” Dr. Schwartz adds. “After eating high-acid foods or drinks, rinse with water before brushing to prevent tooth erosion from the acids.”
“Even when we take precautions, dental emergencies can still happen. A tooth that gets chipped, fractured, or knocked out can be painful; should such an emergency occur, call a dentist and get an appointment as soon as possible,” he concludes. “At Main Street Dental Team, existing or new clients can book an emergency dental appointment over the holiday season.”
