Emily Ann Klotz, Esq., who is dedicated to fully addressing the legal needs of the elderly and disabled and their families and caregivers, has grown her practice as a guardianship attorney with the expansion of legal services that now include guardianships of those with autism. Emily was recently retained by three different families to obtain guardianships over their adult autistic sons and daughter.
“This is a new area for me, as I usually represent people who are seeking guardianship over the elderly,” said Emily. “I have found that families with members who are on the autism spectrum, including people with Asperger’s, are an underserved population.”
These families, Emily added, are concerned about the future care, financial security and legal matters of the family member on the autism spectrum, particularly since said family member will often outlive the non-spectrum family member. However, all members of the family unit are affected by the disabled person and can experience extreme stress.
“I feel that these families needed an empathetic ear, a clear explanation of their options when planning for the future and an aggressive advocate for the rights of all of the family members involved,” said Emily. “There are changes when a person with autism reaches the age of majority, which is 18 years old in most states. However, with proper planning, you can find some peace of mind.”
For families that have a member on the autism spectrum that requires guardianship, Emily stresses the importance of retaining legal services, such as those provided by The Law Office of Emily Ann Klotz, which can help one make critical decisions about a child’s future. Emily, the firm’s principal attorney, has practiced in the guardianship area for more than two decades. For more information, please call (212) 661-5858.
