Get Smart – EMV Smart Card Compliance Explained
(PRWEB) April 23, 2014 -- EMV compliant smart cards are coming to a Point of Sale terminal near you - and sooner than you were expecting it. Recent data breaches (Target®, Michaels®, Niemen Marcus®) and software vulnerabilities like “Heartbleed” are prompting the Payment Card Industry and, potentially, Congress, to mandate EMV to secure electronic payments.
EMV, an acronym of Europay, MasterCard, and Visa, is a worldwide payment standard which specifies the use of integrated chip technology (a.k.a. “Smart Card Technology”), in payment cards that address ‘card present’ payment fraud. On April 29, 2014, Prime Factors will present EMV Basics featuring respected industry expert Dave Tushie. This is the first of five webinars that will help payment card professionals understand smart card security and how it changes - but helps - your security compliance program.
While EMV is the standard outside the United States, adoption in the US has lagged while payment card issuing banks and payment card accepting retailers examine the technical, operational, and financial impacts of the technology. The complexity of the migration and the esoteric cryptographic configurations required for effective implementation remain obstacles. Issuers and merchants are incented to migrate to the new standard before October of 2015, at which time liability for any counterfeit card fraud shifts to the party who has not implemented EMV compliant components for its part of the payment system. (EMV compliant cards for Issuers and EMV compliant POS terminals for retailers).
The five-part webinar series presented by Prime Factors featuring Dave Tushie will:
• Survey the basics of EMV-compliant payment processing,
• Trace the life cycle of an EMV payment transaction,
• Sketch EMV implementation options,
• Demystify the cryptographic key complexities that lie at its foundation, and
• Explore the implications for personal identification number (or PIN) requirements for differing payment card types
Tushie is a recognized authority on this subject, sitting on several related standards committees as a voting member. He participated in defining the original EMV specifications and was co-founder of UbiQ, an early software development firm focused on the use of smart cards for electronic payments. He currently provides Product Management oversight for Prime Factors’ Bank Card Security System (BCSS) product line.
