DENVER, Feb. 5, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Alectra Utilities is launching its new electric vehicle (EV) charging facility using a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) made possible through Enbala technologies.
Alectra, which is the second largest municipally-owned utility in North America, announced the selection of Enbala's VPP solution to integrate distributed energy resources (DERs) as part of Alectra's "Alectra Drive for the Workplace" project.
Located at Alectra's executive office in Mississauga, Ontario, the new EV charging facility will demonstrate the value of a VPP that balances the electricity needs and sources of the building, an integrated solar energy storage system and seven EV charging stations. The project aims to mitigate potential cost increases while providing an accessible charging solution for employees that encourages the adoption of EV technology.
Enbala's platform will collect real-time facility data and market prices from Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator to optimize the electricity loads supplied to vehicles and building equipment.
The distributed energy assets will be integrated with the Enbala platform via the cloud and include incorporation of a building automation system that controls rooftop units, seven electric vehicle charging ports, a Sonnen battery and a solar carport inverter.
"We are excited to be able to utilize Enbala's platform as part of the 'Alectra Drive for the Workplace' initiative at our corporate executive office," said Brian Bentz, CEO and President of Alectra, Inc. "As the more decentralized electricity solutions proliferate, we recognize that our customers will look to Alectra as their trusted advisor to evaluate and implement new energy technologies. Our experience working with Enbala will help us to better understand technology trends that will benefit our customers in this changing world of energy."
"We are very pleased to be expanding the work we're doing with Alectra," said Enbala President and CEO Arthur (Bud) Vos. "As we continue to add more distributed assets to the project, the benefits accruing to both Alectra and its customers will increase as well. This has been a very successful initiative so far, and we look forward to continuing to build on this foundational project."
