SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 7, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- A cross between "Mad Men" and "Semi-Tough," "Doubled Down: A Novel of Wall Street in the 1970s" by Gary B. Helms depicts what life was really like for Wall Streeters during this watershed time for society. What sets it apart from other Wall Street tales is the all too human characters with wives and children and senses of humor that get them through the tough times. Helm's eye and ear for their interactions are clearly based on first-hand experience. Like its prequel "Ten Doubles," which chronicled the rise of hot mutual funds in the '60s, it reeks with the authenticity that can only come from one who lived it.
"Doubled Down" reprises Garvey Hatch, a self-described country boy, as he pursues his goal of making enough money, as quickly as possible, to become independent. After all, his needs are modest by Street standards. Hatch has to learn quickly the quirky nature of the unique Wall Street culture, practically invent Portfolio Strategy, and deal with his natural enemies: the consultants who claim to know it all, and the "quants" who count it all.
There are major sub-plots involving complex characters who become more interesting as the story progresses: the owner of the second largest casino in Las Vegas, Hatch's best friend who has an ulcer named Irene, and a sexy heiress who gave up bi-sexuality because she found it too limiting.
Helm's says that his dialogue and discussions reflect the way real people in this fast-paced business really communicate: shorthand, one-liners, in-your-face and the obligatory touch of humor.
Hatch faces financial ruin when his firm is acquired by a notorious international scamster and ends up having to dodge a hit man on his tail. His marriage and family life are imperiled by his weakness for the newly liberated females at every turn and the market is tanking.
Will Hatch be able to pull it off? Is he a sexist jerk or just a lovable product of his time? Readers will enjoy finding out and will learn more about this incredible industry as a side benefit. To learn more please visit, http://www.garybhelms.com.
