ENVIRON Principal Fred Boelter Receives AIHA Henry F. Smyth Jr. Award
Arlington, VA (PRWEB) July 18, 2014 -- Principal Fred Boelter, of ENVIRON’s Boise office, was awarded the Henry F. Smyth Jr. Award from the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA). An AIHA Fellow, Boelter will receive the award at AIHA’s fall conference in October, where he will present the Smyth Award lecture.
The award is presented to an individual who has recognized the needs of the industrial hygiene profession and has made major contributions to fulfill those needs, thereby contributing to the improvement of public welfare.
According to Boelter, “Our profession is continuing to change and adapt to the needs of the public and the nature of the workplace. But at our core, we are exposure scientists. While exposures exist everywhere at all times, not all exposures are unacceptable, nor do they always create unacceptable risk. Conclusions about what is safe and unsafe are not intrinsic but, rather, emerge from the process of assessing, characterizing and managing risk. This is a scientific and judgmental process that evolves over time.”
Boelter has nearly 40 years of experience in industrial hygiene, environmental engineering and risk management. He has investigated and designed controls for a wide range of issues involving air, water, soil and occupational hygiene for stakeholder communities, private industry and federal regulatory agencies. Boelter has provided expert services on a range of matters related to exposure analysis and risk assessment. He is a past recipient of the AIHA Edward J. Baier Technical Achievement Award, which recognizes significant contributions to industrial hygiene.
