He says that after considering all the facts it is the best decision for Eros Sport. Eric Shilka states that labor costs have been rising in China as well over the last 10 years at a rate of 15% per year. According to the US Department of Labor, US labor costs have risen at a rate of 2.3% over the same period. Thus, the gap of cost savings by moving to China are shrinking.
Eros Sport CEO, Eric Shilka reviewed all factors for moving Eros' manufacturing to China. Items up for consideration were labor costs, transportation costs, US Customs and Border Protection duties, quality control, degree of difficulty in conducting business and supply chain lead time. The rise of fuel costs over the last decade has increased shipping charges which further diminish any cost savings by moving production off shore. Another major factor for staying in the US for apparel companies is how long it takes to receive the goods from China. It may take over 2 months to get a garment made and shipped to the US from China compared to 4 weeks when done in the US.
