Companies agree to joint effort to integrate IQ264 PQO plug-in into world-class OTT playout-based linear workflow


EuclidIQ, an innovator in the video compression space, and Tulix Systems, a next-generation video delivery infrastructure provider, today announced a joint effort to integrate the EuclidIQ perceptual quality optimization (PQO) technology into the Tulix Systems’ over-the-top (OTT) workflow.

Tulix Systems provides live streaming, linear, and on-demand OTT services to a variety of global customers, with much of the content transiting through its world-class data center in downtown Atlanta, Georgia.

EuclidIQ, which delivers innovative video compression products that mimic the human visual system to achieve better compression through optimizing perceptual quality, will offer its IQ264 PQO-based technology to Tulix Systems, so that IQ264’s significant bandwidth reduction and enhanced visual quality can be properly integrated into this leading-edge OTT delivery network.

“Our technology integrates PQO directly into H.264 encoding via a plug-in,” said Dr. Nigel Lee, Chief Science Officer at EuclidIQ, ”and achieves 25% bandwidth savings on average, relative to reference H.264 encoding at equivalent quality.”

In addition to OTT, Tulix Systems also offers CDN and ingest services for a number of domestic and international customers. Its core network is designed for live streaming and linear channel playout, which accounts for a majority of its OTT delivery.

Tulix will utilize technical resources from EuclidIQ to integrate IQ264 into a Windows-based x264 encoder instance. As the first step in a multi-phase approach, integrating the IQ264 evaluation plug-in into a Tulix Systems’ encoder solution will allow for testing of on-demand (VOD) assets and playout-based linear channel distribution at reduced data rates.

Tulix will encode and subjectively test more than 40 episodes of television content to prove out IQ264’s bandwidth reduction and quality improvements, deploying its considerable understanding of OTT delivery to set-top boxes (STB), Internet streaming sticks, and key browser-OS combinations.

Testing will be jointly performed, both to confirm the quality difference between x264 and IQ264x as well as to validate the use of IQ264 assets in Tulix Systems’ VOD and linear playout OTT channel configurations.

Once the testing is complete, EuclidIQ will explore the fielding of a Linux- or Windows-based encoding service, as well as exploring how the upcoming IQ265 product, designed to support HEVC encoding, will fit into Tulix Systems’ UltraHD workflows.
